My good fortune in having stumbled into the hotel industry some 22 years ago having spent a decade in Commercial Real Estate has meant many layers of learning and experience in this dynamic and challenging sector. As with so many of our business community, I live and breathe our housing shortages, infrastructure shortfalls, and challenged immigration settings to put it mildly.  I see the immense effort that goes into the perpetuation of our town’s outstanding reputation as a place to live and to visit – yet we continue to have more work to be accomplished.

With a workforce that is significantly younger than I am, and as a mother of two local teens, I am inspired and encouraged by the innovative and thought-provoking approach that our young people bring to our businesses.  I’m determined to find a way to ensure our community remains diverse, confident and stable in a way that enables our commercial enterprises to thrive as well as preserving the ‘Queenstown’ that we all fall in love with.

I’m Hamish Walker and I’m a very passionate advocate for the business community. I am standing for the Chamber Board for a second term because I love Queenstown and believe a healthy community is only possible with a thriving business community. I see the Chamber as an important organisation which helps businesses thrive by ensuring businesses are represented loud and clear.

Over the past two years I have advocated for different businesses on the Chamber Board because I believe that is the role the Board Members are elected to do. Over the past several months I have been building a real estate business called Premium Real Estate which I launched in April this year.   I have excellent networks and relationships within Local and Central Government, and key stakeholder groups.  I previously served the community for a number of years in many roles including a board director on the Otago Rugby Union, member of the Otago/Southland Lotteries Committee and as a Member of Parliament for this area. I have been a successful business owner and have worked in the banking, accounting, and real estate industries. I have a Bachelor of Business majoring in Accounting.

May I respectfully ask for your vote for the Chamber Board.

I am a partner with national law firm Wynn Williams, based in our Queenstown office. My practice focuses on property and commerce - supporting businesses, landlords, tenants, and property investors on all aspects of property including leasing, sales and purchases and developments. I also specialise in advising in New Zealand's consumer market, including retail property and expansions, consumer and competition law and all things e-Commerce and digital.

I am passionate about our region, its determination and entrepreneurial spirit. As part of the team championing Queenstown businesses and advocating for opportunities on their behalf, I bring a fresh perspective to the table, backed by my business acumen and strategic nous. Our region is at a pivotal stage and it needs strong advocates to ensure its continued growth and prosperity. We need to work in partnership to achieve collective success and lead the way for NZ.

My experience includes a recent appointment to Property Council’s national retail committee, charged with advocating for the retail sector in New Zealand.
