It’s day three and what a fantastic welcome I have had to the CEO role by your Chamber team and Board. I have never experienced a nicer (or more efficient start) to any role. But, on reflection, I shouldn’t have been so surprised. Folks in this part of the world are used to, and good at, welcoming people. They take their manaakitanga responsibilities seriously, Queenstown’s success relies upon it.

Keeping Queenstown’s reputation as a fantastic place to visit and live means that the tiaki promise of caring for people and place should be asked of all of us, not just international visitors. Its especially relevant for those of us in leadership positions. The Chamber will continue to advocate and assist in planning for the future, aiming to improve how we care for business owners, managers and those they employ. I will be immediately starting work with the labour force steering group, as well as representing your interests in areas of local and national government policy development.

A number of members have already downloaded the 'HR Resource Kit' which assists employers to develop a greater understanding of how to create ‘attraction, engagement and retention’ strategies aimed at reducing labour and skills shortages. Please take some time to complete this HR assessment of your business and I also welcome your feedback around how useful you found this tool.

But it’s not all policy and politics. We will continue to make your membership relevant and dynamic by holding networking functions, educational events and member briefings. We will reward and celebrate those in our community who excel at our biennial award ceremonies as well as showcase our member’s products and services.

As a group we will continue to proudly wave the flag for Queenstown and shout from the rooftops that the people working in the local business community are the heart and soul of its past, present and future success.

I look forward to getting cracking in this great role. If you are a reader, you can follow my progress in this newsletter or my LinkedIn page or if face-to-face is more your style feel free to give me a call on 021 488 709.
