The last couple of weeks have heralded a number of Government announcements that for us have been a mixed bag.  Great news on the additional financial support being offered, the devils are working through the detail at the moment. 

I know immigration is a topic close to many people's hearts, but even more broadly than that the challenges of employing people are very very real.  Appreciating it is cold comfort that the squeeze is being felt in all parts of New Zealand, it is acute for our hospitality, accommodation and activity sectors.  We are working hard through the Chamber network and directly with Minister Nash on some simple visa changes we believe can make a relatively big impact. We are also working directly with senior Immigration NZ officials and we thank a number of our members who have supported us in providing us practical advice on the positions to take and I thank those who have also shared their stories with us. Hopefully we will have more [positive] things to say in this space soon.

A quick shout out for a couple of other Chamber initiatives and events that we would love your support for.

First, you may have seen our newsflash on Train, Retain and Regain.  This just gets better for businesses, with MSD now offering the wage subsidy for two staff members for every one staff member you commit to one of the study programmes.  See more details below.  This is a fantastic initiative that we really need your support for so we can continue to access such opportunities in future.  If you haven't already signed up, time is of the essence.  Just click here.


Second, after a rush of enthusiasm for our first business confidence survey,  and we know people are busy, but its really important for us to be able to capture as much information about what you are experiencing.  The real value in these surveys will be in telling the story over time.  If you haven't yet completed it, you have until 5pm Friday.

Q2 Business Confidence Survey
A friendly reminder that the q2 Business Confidence Survey is open! We sent a link last week to the key contact for each member business. Thank you if you have already completed this survey. If you haven't yet completed this and you are the best placed person in your business to do so, please click on the link below. The information gathered will be incredibly valuable to our work in advocating on your behalf. This time we will also be able to compare across quarters.

Once again we are partnering with the Wanaka Chamber, and thanks to the Lakes Weekly Bulletin, DQ and QLDC for their promotion of this survey for us.
 
The survey is open now until 5pm on Friday 21 May.  As always, the greater the number of responses and breadth of coverage we can achieve the more robust and relevant the data will be.

Welcome to Winter - Window Dressing Competition
In conjunction with Destination Queenstown, we are now welcoming Expressions of Interest from Queenstown's downtown businesses to participate in the Welcome to Winter ‘Dress the Town' Competition.

The ‘Welcome to Winter’ events programme will create a vibrant and festive atmosphere in downtown Queenstown from the 2nd – 4th July 2021 for our international, national, and local visitors. 

Awesome Prizes are up for grabs which only those who get amongst the competition will be eligible for, not to mention all the fun and beauty you will bring to downtown by dressing your shop front!

- Everyone who enters will receive a 'dressing starter kit' which will be delivered to you by Monday 15th June.
- Your window dressing needs to be up and complete by the 24th June
- Judging will take place on the 3rd July
- Competition results will be announced Saturday 3rd July on the stage at 3 p.m. Presentation in store of Award at 4 p.m. by our judges
- Applications close Friday 4th June

Jobs for Nature Work
The Friends of Tucker Beach Wildlife Management Reserve Group (a volunteer community group) have received $1m of DOC’s Jobs for Nature funding for a 3 year conservation program. GSD Workforce Limited (subsidiary of Bungy NZ) is managing the project on behalf of the Group.  
 
Workers are needed for this mildly physical outdoor job. The work involves removing noxious plants and preparing for planting of native plants.  Work is available 5 days a week however it may best suit people looking for an extra 2-3 days each week in addition to the work they do for your company. 
 
The project is timed to fit in with tourism peak trading and environmental conditions at Tucker Beach. It may help to support your staff retention by providing extra hours during these periods, or to allow you to hire people further in advance of busy trading period starts.
 
Period 1: 17/May 2021 – 18/June 2021
Period 2: 15/August 2021 – 30/September 2021
Break for NZ school holidays
Period 3: 18/October 2021 – 10/December 2021
Break for Xmas and School holidays
Period 4: 24/January 2022 – 14/April 2022
Break for NZ school holidays
Period 5: 2/May 2022 – 17/June 2022
 
No experience is needed, just the right attitude. Workers will be provided with tools, PPE clothing, training and they would need to wear suitable, sturdy footwear. NOTE: Conditions of the DOC funding is that workers are legally entitled to do this work in NZ, and are to be paid the NZ living wage (currently $22.10).

Retail NZ's Wage Survey
Please take part in Retail NZ's wage survey. This information informs their Wages Guide, a valuable resource that helps you ensure that you reward and retain your business's most important asset – your employees.
 
If you participate you'll receive a FREE copy of the Wages guide. It costs $125 (ex GST) for Retail NZ members and $250 (ex GST) for Retail NZ non-members, so it is well worth getting involved.

We have seen many challenges and changes over the past 12 months, including COVID-19, increasing overhead costs, and another significant lift to the minimum wage. The Wages Guide can provide some certainty about the right wage levels for your business.

Retail NZ has been running a Wages Survey for over 20 years and it remains a highly valued benefit of membership. The survey covers 21 retail specific positions, including back office and ecommerce roles. It allows you to see average wage rates for 14 different retail categories, six regions, and four turnover brackets.
